As much as I love paper, chalkboards are a fun way to dress up any event. I have a chalkboard in our kitchen that is always filled with fun sayings around the holidays and during any event that we host. Including a bit of humor on your chalkboard is sure to grab your guests' attention!
So when I got asked to plan a wedding based around chalkboards where paper is traditionally used, as much as I love them, my first reaction was, really? No paper?! But I am really impressed with what we were able to come up with and love the uniqueness the chalkboards brought to this wedding! We created the welcome sign, program, food labels, song quotes and photobooth sign all using chalkboards. Using chalk pens rather than chalkboards definitely helps with the look of chalkboards. Just beware that chalk pens often leave a dark residue after the ink is gone on the chalkboard. An alternative if you don't want to buy expensive chalkboards, consider buying canvas from the craft store and using chalkboard paint to create a large chalkboard.
In addition to the chalkboards, for the place cards, we found two old windows at an antique store that we restored and wrote in alphabetical order each guests' name. This wedding was a rustic theme with lots of burlap but the chalkboards added a fun variety to the event. Rather than using baby's breath which is often typical for rustic weddings, we chose to use a variety of fall flowers in mason jars including mums, blue thistle, daisies, pink hypericum and goldenrod. They were inexpensive and a great alternative to using baby's breath.
